Utilizing gesture and color to evoke an atmospheric mood, I create an experience of our natural world that resembles both the ethereal and terrestrial. It is an examination of place, time, and the interiors of our mind.
In seeking new ways to produce paintings that move beyond the two-dimensional canvas and into the three-dimensional world, forms expand from the constraints of the picture plane, reaching into the tangible.
My process involves a tactile exploration of the materials. Sewing into the canvas with thread and beads symbolizes the interwoven nature of life while allowing for a more intimate relationship with the artwork. These elements emerge and recede into the surface, sometimes imitating paint or beads of water, blurring the lines of reality and illusion and challenging viewers to look beyond the macrocosm and into the microcosm.
Most recently, my work has been inspired by the strange forms of fungi, using them as a symbol of resilience, the interdependence of all life forms, and the decomposition of one thing to bring life to another.
